If you enjoy oatmeal for breakfast, you may want to try something different for a change. There are other kinds of cereals out there that can be cooked hot and enjoyed as a nutritious source of fiber and vitamins for your first meal of the day. Here are just a few:
Cream of Wheat is a porridge made from finely ground wheat kernels and has been around since the late 1800s. You can buy it in all kinds of configurations today, but the basic version starts out bland, which makes it ideal for flavoring with fruits, nuts, sugar or maple syrup. Similar to Cream of Wheat is Cream of Rice, which many babies eat as their first cereal because of it being gluten free.
Grits are a Southern favorite, and is made by boiling ground cornmeal. It is usually served as a breakfast side dish along with bacon and eggs or chicken and waffles, and flavored with savory toppings like gravy. Modern grits use a softer, processed corn called hominy, known as "hominy grits".
Mush, or Cornmeal Mush, is similar to grits. Often, the cornmeal porridge is allowed to set into semi-solid form, then cut into squares or rectangles and pan fried. A sweet topping is usually used, like maple syrup or molasses.
Quinoa is a popular grain crop grown for its edible seeds. As a rich source of protein, dietary fiber and vitamins, quinoa seeds are tender enough to be eaten in salads, and is gluten-free. As a breakfast cereal, quinoa is often cooked with milk and flavored with sugar, cinnamon and fresh blueberries; or it may be mixed with heartier grains like oatmeal and chopped nuts.
Couscous is a traditional dish of Northern Africa, used in the cuisines of Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Libya, among other countries of the region. Made from granules of durum wheat, couscous is usually served with a meat and vegetable stew poured over it. There are many breakfast recipes these days, combining the couscous with sugar, fruits and milk for a light but nutritious dish.
Puddings and Porridges aren't only for dessert. Heated up, they make a delicious breakfast as well. Try a sweetened Rice Pudding or Bread Pudding.
And don't forget, if you don't have any of these exotic grains, you can always mix your granola with some milk and heat on the stove or microwave for a very satisfying hot breakfast.
