Zojirushi’s journey started back in 1918, pioneering the manufacturing of glass-lined vacuum insulated bottles. This was a groundbreaking technology at the time, setting the stage for our commitment to innovation and quality. A Shift in Consumer Demand
By the 1970s, Japan was experiencing a period of slow yet steady economic growth. This shift in the economy brought about changes in consumer demand, with a growing focus on middle-class families and their needs. Consumers were looking for high-quality products that not only served a functional purpose but also added a touch of elegance to their homes.
Introducing the Air Pot®: The Innovation of “Osudake”
Enter the Air Pot®. In 1973, Zojirushi introduced its first Air Pot®, a product that embodied our commitment to quality and innovation. Prior to the Air Pot®, we produced what are now known as carafes or handy pots. Serving from a carafe required lifting and tilting, which could be cumbersome, especially when dealing with large capacities. The introduction of instant coffee and tea during this period made this even more inconvenient.
The Air Pot® was aptly named “Osudake,” which means “just push” in Japanese. This name highlighted its convenient dispensing mechanism, a game-changer in beverage services. The Air Pot® featured a pump mechanism in the lid, allowing users to simply press a button to dispense a beverage. No more lifting, tilting, or spilling!
Elegance and Convenience Combined
With the Air Pot®, users could leave the vessel firmly on the countertop, press the pump, and effortlessly dispense a cup of coffee or hot water for tea. This innovation not only improved convenience but also added a touch of sophistication to the kitchen. The Air Pot® was designed with stylish flower motifs and patterns, reflecting the trends of the time.
The Air Pot® became an instant hit, revolutionizing how beverages were served in households. Its elegance and ease of use made it a staple in homes across Japan and eventually around the world. It allowed for larger capacities without the hassle of lifting, making it perfect for family gatherings, parties, and everyday use.
