Grilling season is here, not only for us here in the U.S., but for meat lovers everywhere. Traditionally, Memorial Day is supposed to be the unofficial kick-off to the barbecue season, but it’s so popular these days many people grill all year, including in cold climate states. The most popular days to grill are July 4th, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day and Mother’s Day in that order. What about in other parts of the world—what do you think they’re grilling, as the days get warmer? Here are a few of the most well-known BBQ styles from other countries.
Along with nearby Argentina, these South American countries get their meat traditions from their own cowboy (gaucho) history, when wild cattle roamed the lands. Perhaps you’ve had churrasco cuts served off of those long, flat bladed skewers?
It’s an injustice when we think all Australians do for their BBQ is to “put another shrimp on the barbie”. In fact, they love to put all kinds of meats on the grill, including sausages, prawn, lamb, pork, chicken, emu and even kangaroo meat.
Ah yes, it may not be a huge steak or burger, but these skewers of bite-sized chicken parts are the quintessential street food of Japan. They are usually grilled over binchotan, a very dense charcoal that burns cleanly and with high heat to seal in flavor.
Korean barbecue is what brings meat and friends together. The dipping sauces, the marinades and the flavorful side dishes are what make their cooking style so unique. Try it at home with the Zojirushi grill; here’s how Bert-san did it in his blog post.
